Jiva successfully treats
Diabetic Neuropathy in Eight Months

Diabetes, known as Madhumeha (Madhu means ‘honey’ and Meha means ‘urine’) in Ayurveda, is classified as a Maha Rog (Major Disease) because, if not treated in time, it can lead to several complications in the body, including eye problems, joint pains, impotency, kidney failure, sexual and urologic problems, and more.

Diabetic Neuropathy, one of the most extreme complications of Diabetes, has become a common phenomenon nowadays. This problem is mainly caused in long-suffering Diabetics with uncontrolled sugar levels, and is usually brought under control with the help of stronger medication, and at times, hospitalization.

We recently treated a case of Diabetic Neuropathy at the Jiva TeleMedicine Center. The patient, Mrs. Kamla Mehta (name changed), was a 70-year-old Diabetic from Ahmadabad, India. She had been suffering from the disease for the last 25 years and had been insulin-dependent all this while. For the last five years, she had also been experiencing numbness and a constant tingling sensation in her legs.

After analyzing Mrs. Mehta’s case in detail, one of Jiva’s doctors found out that her case had reached the stage of Diabetic Neuropathy. Her prolonged problem of Madhumeha (Ayurvedic term for Diabetes) had led to aggravation of Vata (Air) and Nadi Shodh (nerve damage), which had caused symptoms like numbness and tingling sensation.

What is Diabetic Neuropathy?

Diabetic neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes, in which nerves are damaged as a result of high blood sugar levels. Nerve injuries are caused by decreased blood flow and high blood sugar levels, and are more likely to develop if sugar levels are not well-controlled. On an average, the symptoms of Diabetic Neuropathy begin 10 to 20 years after the diagnosis of the disease. Statistics indicate approximately 50% of people with diabetes will eventually develop nerve damage.

Some of the common symptoms of Diabetic Neuropathy include deep pain in the feet and legs, muscle cramps, numbness, tingling or burning sensation in the extremities, particularly the feet, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, and constipation, among others.

Jiva’s Personalized Treatment Plan
Jiva prepared a customized treatment plan for Mrs. Mehta, focusing on Madhumehar Chikitsa (treatment to control blood sugar levels) and pacification of Vata. In addition, she was recommended special nervine tonics to repair the damage done to her nerve tissues. She was also suggested Panchakarma (Ayurvedic therapies) in the form of snehan and svedana (oleation and fomentation) to improve blood circulation in her nerves. The personalized diet and lifestyle plan advised by Jiva was aimed at keeping her sugar under control and Vata in balance.

“Even after trying all kinds of treatment, my Diabetes problem had gone from bad to worse. I contacted Jiva as a last option. With the help of their herbal medicines and tailor-made diet chart, I was able to bring my blood sugar levels under control in just five months! The nerve problems
are also remarkably better now. Today, I urge every Diabetic to try
Ayurveda as a primary option and not as a last resort.”

The Result
Mrs. Mehta took Jiva’s treatment for eight months. After the first five months, her sugar levels got back under control, and eventually, she did away with the insulin doses as well. Her problem of numbness had improved considerably; she felt the symptoms only when she walked too much. She is continuing with the medicines to keep her body healthy.
