In the Fields of Stewart Gunj

Being born and brought up in rural South Andaman, passing alongside the fields of Stewart Gunj had been a regular feature during my first eight years of schooling at Govt Middle School Kanyapuram. The fields, apart from being the rice bowl of the area, its stunning greenery on both sides of the stretch of road passing through the fields of Stewart Gunj (kheti raasta) used to be a visual treat. The 2004 Great Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake and the resultant tsunami however changed the landscape of…See More

Are we waiting for the Jarawas to re-invent the wheel?

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands which made headlines after the 2004 Great Sumatra Andaman Earthquake, is once again making headlines in the national as well an international media following release of a video clip featuring Andaman’s Jarawa tribe by a British media. Immediately other NGO’s, media houses, activists and their likes switched to campaign mode releasing reports and updates almost on a day-to-day basis, many of which are drifted miles away from truth. What it emerges out of the…See More

Men at Work

Now a day, a group of men are seen engaged in a mission of digging roads and laying power cables in South Andaman area. During the last few months this group had dug roads in Shore Point - Bambooflat - Wimberly Gunj area. During their digging mission, I could see this group possess a unique work culture, which makes this league of diggers “extraordinary” among the contemporaries.

The roads, wherever this particular group has laid cables has not only been reduced to half its capacity,… Continue
