Community of Andaman Islands

Andamani's of the World Unite !

A replica of the world-famous Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, along with some original fittings and articles, will be seen in Mumbai at the country's first upcoming museum dedicated to revolutionaries of the Indian freedom struggle.

The museum will come up on 10,000 sq ft at the existing 'Swatantryaveer Savarkar Rashtriya Smarak' at Dadar, which is a national monument to one such revolutionary, Vinayak D. Savarkar, famous as Veer Savarkar. SSRS president Arun S. Joshi said while some of Veer Savarkar's belongings have already been brought to Mumbai, as reported in some media of mainland, a team will be coming to Andaman and Nicboar Islands on Feb 1st 2012 to bring back some other articles So far they have brought a couple of the original doors of the iron cell where he was lodged, some heavy iron chains and cuffs with which he was tied on the arms and legs, his jail clothes and other small items, they are planning to take huge crushing instrument to which the prisoners were chained and forced to move around to crush and extract oil from dried coconuts, one of the most dreaded forms of rigorous labour in those times, but I feel the original things should  not be taken from cellular jail as it is declared as a National Memorial since 1979.They can make a replica of the original in Mumbai, but the islanders may not like to part away with the originals.

Kohinoor diamond once the largest known diamond in the world the origin of Kohinoor was in in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. It changed hand between many rulers of India to Persian rulers and many bitter wars was fought for it. Several Indian MPs have demanded that the Kohinoor diamond should be returned to India by Britain. Like this younger generation may also have to fight to bring it back if ever they succeed to take the originals from cellular jail.

So it is better to leave the original things at cellular Jail if anyone is so interested to know about cellular jail, they should rather visit the jail and feel it. Cellular Jail, presently a revered shrine dedicated to great Indian freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the Independence of our Nation.
